Why I Miss Thailand

Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Some not too long ago, I took a short vacation in Pattaya and Bangkok. To be honest, it was my third time trip to the country and none of it had been a disappointment. Well, except the momentary letdowns every time I see a ‘hot chick’ staring at me and to later find out that both of us are actually of the same gender. Or to be politically correct, was of the same gender.

As I’ve mentioned earlier, it was my third visit to this beautiful nation where I’ve got no grasp of command for the local language at all. On my previous visits, I’ve been to Phuket, Chiang-rai as well as Chiang-mai. Each of it was a different experience on its own, but altogether it was purely rewarding.

For starters, the food was simply awesome. Somehow, the cuisine by our northern neighbour is pretty much catered to our Malaysian taste bud. I’m not sure if it’s just me, but I would thank my guiding star if I could have a bowl of heavenly authentic tom-yum-gong in my daily meals. Right from this point, I don’t mean to offend any Muslims or vegetarians who are reading this, but nothing tastes better than any delicacies with pork as its main subject. Yes, pork burger, pork hot-dogs and pork chops.

I’m really sorry if you’re a pig and you’re reading this, but your relative was REALLY tasty.

Heck, they’ve even made powders out of pigs. Though it’s a mild one, but hey, it has ‘double milk protein’. So you really can’t complain much.

Wait, what? It wasn’t made from pigs? But it says babi, so...oh; it must be the Malaysian in me. Gee, bummer.

Put the food aside, let’s talk about drinks, shall we? Oh my heaven, the drinks. THE DRINKS! The booze over the borders is seriously reasonable in pricing. I’m not saying it’s really dirt-cheap, but it’s significantly lower than the price we are currently paying over here in Malaysia. And the array of drinks displayed in the refrigerators of their local convenient stores is as good as the menu of a mini pub.

And most of the drinks sold in their 7-11s are not easily available in Malaysia. And I even have my personal favourites in Thailand, the Bacardi Breezer and Smirnoff Ice.

And once again, I would have to reiterate the fact that I’m not an alcohol addict. It’s just that alcohol and I; we share this little fondness and attraction for each other. Yes, it’s definitely a two-way relationship.

Before I forget, don’t drink and blog. You never know if you’re the next drunk typo victim. A community message brought to you by vincephilosophy.com. Oh and er, don’t drink and drive, that too. Use the public transport, especially when you’re very wasted so everyone can look at you make a total fool out of yourself in public. Who knows, you might be the next most watched idiot on Youtube?

The night entertainment is another factor that contributes towards my liking of Thailand. Take Chiang-mai for instance, quiet little taverns are simply in abundance. Every corner you go to (within the vicinity of the hotel I stayed in, actually), there’s a pub just for you to sit back and chill. Not the loud, trashy music-playing kind of drinking place, but a humble outlet with a bar and a pool table, where I could actually have a decent conversation with someone I’ve just met without screaming at the top of my voice and then perhaps shoot some pool with him/her/it later.

No doubt, going to clubs where everyone is shaking and grinding on each other in the most intoxicated manner on the dance-floor may sound like a pretty entertaining way to spend the Saturday nights, but I personally prefer the accompaniment of a tranquil atmosphere of taphouses and a few rounds of drinks that isn’t overpriced.

As for the strip of go-go bars that I’ve walked past in Pattaya recently, it was an eye-opener, no doubt. Uhm, let’s just say it’s a nice place and there are some nice girls. Just, nice. Not really my thing, but it’s, er, nice.

Yup, this is a just a medium-long blog post to show how much I miss Thailand and I’m recovering from one of those vacation hangovers. Oh gosh, more and more motivated to earn my dough in the future and make it a point to have a holiday in Thailand at least once every year. What? Can’t I just sound shallow for this one time? Don’t judge me.

Oh by the way, I totally adopted a tiger in Pattaya.

A tiger, literally. Not a Thai-girl, gee.

This is one of the many emotional tortures I have to endure on an almost daily basis.

I’m given a hair conditioner where I’m not allowed to use it nor sell it. What am I suppose to do with it? Keep it in a glass display case and look at it everyday while angelical hair goes unconditioned? WHERE CAN LIKE THIS LAH?

The Crossing Dilemma

To cross or not to cross.

That is the question.
